Alghero is a city in the north-west of Sardinia, famous for its coral fishing and Catalan past. The Coral Museum (Museo del Corallo) has beautiful corals.
The bastions and city walls surrounding the Old Town were built by the Genoese and the Spanish in the 12th-14th centuries. From the city park (Giardino Publici), you can reach the Porta Terra city gate tower, which was the entrance to the Jewish quarter during the reign of the Catalan ruler Peter IV.
It is worth walking along the city walls to Torre la Maddalena. From here you have the most beautiful view of the bay and the Capocaccia rock rising in the distance.
The tower and apse of Piazza Duomo were built in 1552 in the late Catalan Gothic style. The long construction was only completed in 1730. The town's landmark is the Sulis Tower, built in the 15th century. The tower is 30 m above the water level, and its width and height are both 23 m. A spiral staircase leads to the upper floor. It was named after Vicenzo Sulis, a hero of the Cagliari uprising, who was held here by the French army until 1821.
