A hackathon is an event that brings people together to solve a problem. Traditionally, a hackathon brings together people with computer engineering backgrounds who work in teams to solve a stated challenge through technical solutions, such as an app, website, online service, or database.

Public media's parent engagement app hackathon opens the doors to parents and combines elements of a traditional hackathon with elements of a big brainstorm. This hackathon model brings in parents and people from the community to brainstorm challenges they face and then pairs them with technical people to collectively create technical prototypes of app solutions to tackle the challenges. It gives a voice to those who don't often get a say in the media created for them, which is exactly aligned with the work of public media stations. It's a perfect fit!

Our First 8 Hackathon at WGBH is shared here to shows how we used hacking to engage parents in our community. Thanks to support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the hackathon brought together parents, teachers, health care professionals, librarians, designers, and developers at their local public media station to create app prototypes aimed at the healthy development of kids.
