When we hear the term “singer/ songwriter”, we typically think of people like Paul Simon, John Lennon, and hundreds of others who are, or were, active within the last 60 or 70 years. But the fact is that even as far back as the 18th century, the concept of the singer/ songwriter was known. Charles Dibdin is a prime example of this. This prolific composer had over 600 songs to his name (compare that to the Beatles 213!), and for most of them, he wrote the lyrics as well as the music. Since we was a novelist, dramatist and actor as well as musician, composer and keyboard player, he no doubt had a way with words as well as with notes. Active in the theater, he worked with David Garrick himself: the greatest English actor of the century. Composing songs, singing, writing libretti, articles, acting on the stage – as if all that weren’t enough, Dibdin also found time to compose keyboard music, for example, a set of six fine “Lessons” (sonatas) for the harpsichord or fortepiano; this recording presents the first of these sonatas (in C Major).
