महादेवी वर्मा का जन्म सन 1907 में उत्तर प्रदेश के जनपद, फरूखाबाद में एक सुशिक्षित मध्यवर्गीय परिवार में हुआ। उनके पिता श्री गोविन्द प्रसाद, उच्च शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के बाद मुख्याध्यापक के रूप में कार्यरत थे, और उनकी माता श्रीमती हेमरानी देवी, शिक्षित और धार्मिक विचारों वाली, कुशल गृहिणी थीं। माता-पिता की पहली संतान महादेवी का जन्म, बहुत लंबी प्रतीक्षा और मनौती के पश्चात हुआ था। कहा जाता है कि उनके परिवार में 7 पीढ़ियों के बाद पहली बार, कन्या ने जन्म लिया था। अतः उन्हें कुलदेवी दुर्गा के विशेष अनुग्रह का प्रसाद मानकर, उनका नाम महादेवी रखा गया। कौन जानता था, कि आने वाले समय में, महादेवी अपने व्यक्तित्व एवं कृतित्व से इस नाम की सार्थकता को भी सिद्ध करेंगी।

महादेवी के संस्मरणों और रेखाचित्रों में उनके बहिर्मुखी व्यक्तित्व की अत्यंत जीवंत अभिव्यक्ति होती है, लेकिन उनकी कविताओं में वेदना, करूणा और अकेलेपन की आत्मलीनता ही अधिक व्यक्त होती है, जो इनके अंतर्मुखी व्यक्तित्व को उजागर करती है। उनके व्यक्तित्व का यह अंतर्विरोध, उनके पाठकों के लिए ही नहीं, वरन् आलोचकों के लिए भी एक समस्या बन गया है। अगर महादेवी के गद्य और पद्य साहित्य को आमने-सामने रख दिया जाए तो दोनों दो अलग-अलग भिन्न व्यक्तियों की परस्पर, विरोधी चेतना की रचनाएँ लगेंगी। कविता, गद्य, चित्र, संगीत, राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन, नारी चेतना, आदि, कितने ही क्षेत्र हैं, जिनमें महादेवी अपने महीयसी जीवन का पुण्य स्पर्श देकर अमरता प्रदान करती चली गईं।

Mahadevi Verma was born in 1907 in a well-educated middle-class family in Farukhabad district, Uttar Pradesh. Her father Shri Govind Prasad, worked as a headmaster after his higher education, and her mother, Smt. Hemrani Devi was an educated and religious-minded, skilled homemaker. Mahadevi, the first child of her parents, was born after a long wait and plea. It is said that for the first time after 7 generations in their family, a girl child was born. Therefore, considering her a special grace of Goddess Durga, she was named Mahadevi. Who knew, that in the coming times, Mahadevi would prove the significance of this name with her personality and work.

Mahadevi's memoirs and sketches have a very lively expression of her extroverted personality, but in her poems, the self-absorption of pain, compassion and loneliness is more expressed, which exposes her introverted personality. This contradiction of his personality has become a problem not only for his readers but also for the critics. If the prose and poetry of Mahadevi are put face to face, then both will appear to be creations of mutual, conflicting consciousness of two different persons. Poetry, prose, pictures, music, national movement, women's consciousness, etc., there are so many areas in which Mahadevi went on giving immortality by giving her a virtuous touch of her life.
