Beijing Road (北京路) is an iconic street in the Yuexiu District of Guangzhou that integrates culture, commerce, and history, and marks the original site where the city of Guangzhou was founded. It is not only one of Guangzhou's most bustling commercial pedestrian streets but also a globally rare example of a city's central axis that has remained unchanged from ancient times to the present day. The most distinctive feature of Beijing Road is the preserved and showcased archaeological site in its central section; encased under glass, eleven layers of ancient pavements dating back to the Tang Dynasty are visible, offering tangible proof of the historical marvel that Guangzhou's city center has not shifted for over two thousand years. This unique landscape, where a millennium-old road is superimposed upon a modern commercial street, has made it famous worldwide. The street is flanked by a vast array of shops, featuring numerous well-known brands, department stores, specialty restaurants, and time-honored "China Time-Honored Brands," such as Sin Tat Sin Department Store and Guangzhou Department Store. The Guangzhou Dafo Temple, known in full as the Great Buddha Ancient Temple, is situated at the intersection of the bustling Beijing Road Pedestrian Street and Huifu East Road in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. It stands as one of the five major Buddhist temples in the city. The temple was first established during the Southern Han Dynasty (917-971 AD), originally named Xincang Temple, and has undergone numerous cycles of destruction and reconstruction throughout its history. Its most notable era began in the second year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1663), when Pingnan Prince Shang Kexi, to fulfill a vow, sponsored its reconstruction on the original site. He modeled it after the official temples of the capital and the design of Jingshan Temple in Zhejiang. The temple was renamed "Dafo Temple" (Great Buddha Temple) due to its magnificent main hall, which houses three colossal bronze Buddha statues, each approximately 6 meters tall. Dafo Temple is a rare example of a government-sponsored, palace-style temple in the Lingnan region. The architecture of its Mahavira Hall is grand and solemn, distinguished by its use of the northern-style "column reduction method" and intricate dougong (interlocking brackets), making it unique among southern Chinese temples.
