Mount Charles Youth Band
Musical Director: Jonathan Small

The Band is pictured overleaf in the heart of the old china clay port of Charlestown, in the St Austel Bay area of Cornwall. The Youth Band have held the title of 'South West Youth Champions' for six consecutive years and has a dedicated organising committee with stroing beliefs in encouraging music for youth. Each child is introduced into the beginners' class, loaned an instrument and taught how to play it; then they are given music tuition twice weekly without charge. This ensures that all children are given equal opportunities. Over the years the Band has achieved many honours, but their greatest achievement came in July 2000 when, under the direction of former musical director Bryan Hurdley, they won the national title of 'Music for Youth Champions' at the Festival Hall, London. They received an 'outstanding performance' award and were invited to perform a concert in the schools prom at the Royal Albert Hall, London in November 2000.

Mount Charles Youth Band was established in 1970 and proudly boasts that over 400 youngsters have been taught to play a brass instrument through the Youth Band. As a non-sponsored band it relies heavily on raising much of its revenue during the summer months, entertaining the 'locals' and tourists at the popular Cornish holiday resorts. Musical Director Jonathan Small is a soprano player with the Mount Charles Senior Band from whose members the Youth Band receives guidance and great encouragement. We hope you enjoy the music chosen for our album and we thank you for your support.

Recorded at Mount Charles School, St Austell, Cornwall.
