The DIGI Test Cell from Parker is a compact, onboard oil test kit ideally suited for use in marine applications. Capable of testing for water in oil, total base number (TBN), total acid number (TAN), insolubles, and comparative viscosity.

BN is a measurement of the capacity of engine oil for neutralizing strong acids from the combustion of fuel oil. It is not a measure of how alkaline an oil is, but it instead measures the alkaline reserve of the oil or its ability to neutralize acids. The governing factor for the rate of decay of BN is the fuel sulfur level and the initial sump volume. The governing factor for the stable final BN level is the oil consumption rate and the fuel sulfur level.

Rapid BN decrease is caused by the following:
• Low oil consumption.
• Small sump volumes.
• High fuel sulfur levels.

Low BN reserves provide insufficient neutralization capacity leading to corrosion of engine components, particularly around the piston ring pack, piston ring lands and top-end bearing.
