Описание к видео The REAL Origin of the Name "Philippines" (And Why It Almost Didn't Happen) : Episode 6

What is the origin of the name Philippines? It's one of the most-asked questions in Philippine history. The name "Philippines" was given in honor of King Philip II of Spain, a monarch who never even set foot on the islands. But the story of how it got that name is a fascinating tale of colonial rivalry, failed expeditions, and a name that almost didn't stick. We dive into the story of "Las Islas Felipinas" and the explorer who first named it.

The most shocking part? When the name "Las Felipinas" was first given by Ruy López de Villalobos in 1543, it only applied to two islands: Leyte and Samar! So... what was the rest of the country called? In Part 6 of our 10-part series, we uncover the "lost names" of the archipelago, including:

Magellan's Original Name: The first European name for the islands (Hint: It wasn't "Philippines").

The Chinese Trader Name: What the ancient Chinese called the region (Ma-i).

The "Rice Pounder" Island: The best "aha" moment: The Chinese name for Luzon was Liusung... which came from the Tagalog word lusong, meaning... "GIANT RICE POUNDER"!

Join us as we discover how the name for just two islands, given by a failed expedition, was finally made official by Miguel López de Legazpi and ended up defining an entire nation. It's the ultimate story of how Filipinos took a colonial name and transformed it into a symbol of their own proud identity.

This is just Part 6! Subscribe and hit the bell 🔔 so you don't miss Part 7: The Origin of the Flag and Anthem. (The Filipino flag has a secret "war mode" that's unique in the entire world!).

What "lost name" for the Philippines do you think is the coolest? Liusung? Ma-i? San Lázaro? Let us know in the comments! 👇
