What is the origin of the name Philippines? It's one of the most-asked questions in Philippine history. The name "Philippines" was given in honor of King Philip II of Spain, a monarch who never even set foot on the islands. But the story of how it got that name is a fascinating tale of colonial rivalry, failed expeditions, and a name that almost didn't stick.
