(26 Aug 2021) Republican Sen. Thom Tillis says Afghanistan is a "tinderbox" after two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans flocking to Kabul's airport Thursday.
The North Carolina senator who serves on the Armed Services committe says his office has been working to help people evacuate from Afghanistan including American citizens and Afghans who are special immigrant visa holders.
However Tillis says he worries the Biden administration is "underestimating the number of people who are at risk of being stranded in Afghanistan."
"What's the solution?" Tillis said in an interview.
"It's not about to exit on August the 31st and say hey we did what we could. There are American citizens, there a green card holders, there are people who have been issued as SIV visas, and there are 1000s in the pipeline, who deserve to have them and deserve to get evacuated."
In an emotional speech from the White House, U.S. President Joe Biden said the latest bloodshed would not drive the U.S. out of Afghanistan earlier than scheduled, and that he had instructed the U.S. military to develop plans to strike IS.
