Earth has likely never been fully covered by oceans in its entire history. However, there were periods in Earth's early geological history when water covered most of the planet, and landmasses were either nonexistent or minimal.

1. The Hadean Eon (~4.5–4 billion years ago):
During Earth's early formation, the planet was extremely hot and covered in molten rock. Over time, water vapor released by volcanic activity and possibly brought by comets condensed to form oceans. It is possible that during this time, there was little to no land above the water's surface.


2. The Archean Eon (~4–2.5 billion years ago):
In this era, the first continents began to form through tectonic activity. However, Earth's surface was still dominated by vast oceans, and land was sparse.


3. The "Waterworld Hypothesis":
Some scientists propose that Earth may have been almost entirely covered by water during specific periods, particularly in the Archean Eon. This theory is supported by evidence that plate tectonics and continental crust formation were still in early stages, leaving little land above sea level.



Modern Earth is unique in its balance of oceans and continents, but earlier in its history, oceans likely dominated more extensively.
