Aashaan, directed by Johnpaul George, continues his fascination with character-driven storytelling, this time through a movie-within-a-movie setup rooted in the chaos of a film shoot. While the behind-the-scenes humor, insider jokes, and indie filmmaking details feel authentic and often enjoyable, the film’s ambition works against it, as the narrative tries to juggle too many emotional and thematic tracks within a limited frame. The first half leans heavily into the shooting chaos, leaving the second half and the emotional arcs of Anandan and Aashaan underdeveloped. Indrans delivers a compelling, multi-shaded performance that stands out, and the technical craft—especially the VFX and music—adds value. However, uneven emotional payoffs and narrative inconsistency prevent Aashaan from fully landing, making it an earnest, ambitious film that needed tighter focus to truly resonate.
