In April 1945, Black American soldiers of the 183rd Engineer Combat Battalion helped liberate Stalag VII-A, a Nazi concentration camp near Moosburg, Germany. What they encountered would haunt them for the rest of their lives. More than 70,000 prisoners had been brutally starved, tortured, and forced into deadly labor.
Private James Mitchell and his fellow soldiers men who were denied full rights in their own country suddenly became the liberators of thousands who had endured unimaginable suffering.
This powerful and often forgotten story reveals how Black soldiers came face-to-face with Nazi evil, witnessing the ultimate consequence of hatred and racism. In that moment, they understood a painful truth America would take decades to confront: the battle against genocide abroad was deeply connected to the fight against segregation at home.
