📸New Pose Catalogue Male Pose reference for artists book review Japanese pose books

New Pose Catalogue Men's Basic Pose book (Japanese pose books) a quick preview and my thoughts on the value of pose books for artists to use as reference. This is book 2 in the series, which is the male body pose, book 1 is the female basic pose book. Vol 3 is the couples / 2 people poses and Vol 4 is the wall support poses, which again seems to be 2 people posing.
I have been wanting to get my hands on some of the Japanese pose books for a while now, as there doesn't seem to be much in terms of western books for high quality photo reference for artists. They seem to have a large range such as the super pose book series, visual nude pose book, pose catalogues etc. I purchased a few of these recently, but this pose catalogue was the safest to be able to show on YouTube.

My opinion of this book: I was actually quite surprised by how useful it is if you are learning to draw characters in 3d space i.e trying to understand the perspective of different angles for each pose. I don't think you are going to learn detailed anatomy from this type of book, but it seems useful for understanding the basic mannequin and how it would look from different angles in different poses, an important step in working towards working without reference long term. It's a shame the images are quite small, but it's still good enough to use for fundamental structures and working with the simplified mannequin, as shown in the video. I am still a bit undecided about whether it's useful to have the value / monochrome section of the book, which is just a complete copy of the first 100 pages but in black and white, intended for value studies, as cool as the idea is.
