Nihilego returns to Pokemon GO with Solstice event following its returns.

Nihilego is a Poison/Rock type Pokemon, which is weak against Steel/Water/Psychic type and double weak against Ground-type attack. In its previous rotation, Ground-type was a rather underwhelming type such that even with less effective move, Shadow Mewtwo still managed to be one of the strongest counter against Nihilego.

However, Ground-type got a massive buff over the past few months. With Shadow Mamoswine gaining High Horsepower and Shadow Swampert debut, to the debut of Primal Groudon which received a smaller CP nerf than the standard 9% stat nerf with its practically permanent Primal Boost. Shadow Garchomp is also obtainable by players starting from the Rocket Takeover next week.

Shadow Garchomp has slightly less DPS compared to Shadow Mamoswine and Shadow Salamence, while it has much higher TDO and better defensive typing compared to the two. Overall, Shadow Garchomp is mostly identical to Shadow Mamoswine and Shadow Salamence in terms of strength. If you have already built a team of those, Shadow Garchomp might not be an upgrade to your team, while those still lacking in Ground or Dragon type raid attacker would find Shadow Garchomp being a good addition to their team.

With the massive buff on Ground-type, Nihilego can now be Solo raided. As a raid boss it has 177 defense, which is slightly higher than Genesect/Kartana. With Primal Groudon's sheer power and Nihilego's double weakness to Ground-type, Primal Groudon can defeat Nihilego as Solo Raid in Sunny/Clear weather.

With Primal Groudon's extremely high stats, it would even find itself able to handle any of Nihilego's moveset. However, Primal Groudon cannot afford desync and other network/game issues when it is facing Nihilego with Rock-type moves.

For this raid, Primal Groudon is battling Nihilego with Poison-type moves as Solo Raid. Overall it is a pretty straightforward raid with margin on misdodging or desync/regen. At last, even with a desync hit causing an additional relobby, Primal Groudon still defeat Nihilego with considerable amount of time left.
