Union Pacific 4014: Boone Bound

On June 30, 2024, Union Pacific brought out “Big Boy” steam locomotive No. 4014 for another excursion season on the mainline. This year, they aimed to go all across the UP system, beginning with the “Westward Bound Tour” which lasted a month traveling through the states of Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, and Idaho. Another month later on August 28, UP fired up the large lad for its second round of excursions, embarking on the “Heartland of America Tour” passing through the states of Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado.

On this day, September 4th, the train made its way from Council Bluffs, IA to Boone, IA over the ex-CNW mainline. Starting at a location just west of Dunlap, IA, I chased the train all the way to Boone. Unlike last year when I only shot photos with only one video to show for it, I decided to actually record the train at every spot they passed me at. In this video you’ll see 3 different spots with UP 4014, a pacing shot of the train, plus a bonus of an eastbound Intermodal train that passed just ahead of the Big Boy.
