The Mills .75 (0.75 c.c. or .045 c.i.) originally appeared in England in 1948 as a "scaled down" version of the ground-breaking Mills 1.3 c.c. model diesel engine.

It was well made, robust, and easy to start; with forgiving handling characteristics.

Unfortunately it was also expensive to make - and priced accordingly.

It only generated modest sales volumes compared to the Mills 1.3. It lasted on the market for 9 months. The manufacturer soon realised it had to simplify and reduce production steps in order to bring down retail cost.

A redesign was undertaken, and the Series 1 Mills .75 was replaced in mid 1949 by the well known "classic" Mills .75 Series 2, in both "standard" (with fuel cut-out valve) and "popular" (with less elaborate intake and no fuel cut-out valve) variants. That version was to continue in production by the English manufacturer until 1964.

This is the first test run since the engine came into my hands. The test reveals a stuck contra-piston. This will be sorted.

Those who know the marque may have also spotted a further anomaly. The intake venturi is from a 1990's high quality reproduction, the Irvine Mills .75. As such, it does not have the fuel 'cut out' valve on the intake. The tank assembly is also a reproduction.

In summary, it is a lovely little engine, as all good original Mills diesels are.

Equal parts F-34 AVTUR, Castor Oil and Di-ethyl Ether plus 1.5% DII (AMSOIL Diesel Cetane Boost).
