CACTUS FLOWERS AN INCA LEGEND OF THE ORIGIN OF CACTUS*
In the area between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes lived a tribe. Within the tribe lived two young men who had grown up doing everything together, had learned to walk and talk together, and had learned to play together, had discovered the beauty of nature, and had eventually fallen in love. The two, Quehualliu and Pasacana, however, were from different social classes: Quehualliu was a handsome boy, who loved beauty and the flowers he grew and picked for his beloved Pasacana, but he was not concerned with improving his social status or even hunting. Pasacana was the chief's daughter, and her father did not look favorably on the relationship between his daughter and that layabout: the chief believed that Pasacana should marry the best hunter in the tribe. One day, to avoid the chief's constant pressure, the two boys decided to run away, and by sunset they were already in the hills. When Pasacana's father didn't see his daughter return, he realized what had happened and set out with a group of warriors in pursuit of the two fugitives. The two, tired and excited, stopped to rest, where they saw the men searching for them, but the moon was high in the sky, and their pursuers saw them too. Quehualliu and Pasacana had no escape, so they called on Pachamama (Mother Earth) for help, and the goddess, taking pity, opened a deep chasm where the two were able to hide. Outside, Pasacana's father and his men began to scream, cursing the goddess who had interfered and shouting that sooner or later the two would have to emerge. The warriors remained before the chasm all night. The goddess then transformed the two lovers into cacti, and Pasacana, with her bristling spines, protected her beloved and beautiful Quehualliu (which in the language of that tribe means flower). Thus was born Echinopsis pasacana, now Echinopsis atacamensis.
TRICHOCEREUS (Echinopsis Zucc., 1837): The name derives from the Greek "trichos," meaning hair, and "cereus," meaning candle. It is a columnar cactus with numerous dense, hairy spines. This species is also known as the "Bolivian Torch" or "Achuma." It is a very fast-growing columnar cactus native to the desert regions of Bolivia and Mexico but widespread throughout South and Central America. Trichocereus cactuses, in addition to being highly resistant to environmental and climate changes, are capable of absorbing electromagnetic waves. There are many species and forms; it is the largest cactus in the world, T. pascana, which exceeds ten meters in height with a diameter of 50 cm.

FIORI DI CACTUS UNA LEGGENDA INCA SULLA NASCITA DEI CACTUS*
Nella zona tra l’Oceano Pacifico e le Ande viveva una tribù, nella tribù vivevano due giovani che erano cresciuti facendo tutto assieme, avevano imparato a camminare e a parlare insieme e sempre insieme avevano imparato a giocare e avevano scoperto la bellezza della natura e alla fine si erano innamorati. I due, Quehualliu e Pasacana, erano però di diverso ceto sociale: Quehualliu era un bel ragazzo, che amava la bellezza e i fiori che coltivava e raccoglieva per la sua amata Pasacana, ma non si preoccupava di migliorare il proprio stato sociale e neppure di cacciare. Pasacana era la figlia del capo e suo padre non vedeva di buon occhio il rapporto tra sua figlia e quel nullafacente: il capo riteneva che Pasacana avrebbe dovuto sposare il miglior cacciatore della tribù.
Un giorno, per evitare le continue pressioni del capo, i due ragazzi decisero di fuggire e al calare del sole erano già sulle colline. Il padre di Pasacana, quando non vide rientrare la figlia, capì quel che era successo e partì con un gruppo di guerrieri all’inseguimento dei due fuggitivi; i due, stanchi ed emozionati, si fermarono a riposare, così videro gli uomini che li cercavano, ma la luna era alta nel cielo e anche gli inseguitori li videro. Quehualliu e Pasacana non avevano scampo, perciò chiesero aiuto a Pachamama (Madre Terra) e la dea impietosita aprì una profonda voragine dove i due poterono nascondersi. Fuori il padre di Pasacana e i suoi uomini si misero ad urlare, maledicendo la dea che si era intromessa e urlando che prima o poi i due sarebbero dovuti uscire. I guerrieri rimasero davanti alla voragine per tutta la notte. La dea allora trasformò i due innamorati in cactus e Pasacana con le sue irte spine protesse il suo amato e bellissimo Quehualliu (che nella lingua di quella tribù vuol dire fiore). Così ebbe origine l’Echinopsis pasacana, oggi Echinopsis atacamensis.
