Why is it legal for banks to create money? What is the law that makes that possible? In this part of the Money Insights series, I give an introduction to the politics that have led governments to outsource money creation to banks. This includes debunking some harmful myths, uncovering key points of contention, and identifying primary decision-makers. Along the way, I show that banks’ privilege to create money changes over time and is constantly being contested in ways that that ordinary people can influence.
