Risk factors:
Hypertension
Smoking, moderate to heavy alcohol use
Family history
Sympathomimetic drug use

Most common SAH: Ruptured saccular (berry) aneurysm

Signs / symptoms:
Severe & sudden onset of headache different from previous pattern or described as "worst headache of my life"
Nausea, vomiting, brief LOC, focal neurologic deficits, or meningismus

Diagnosis:
Noncontrast CT scan of the head: performed initially due to high sensitivity early in SAH
Lumbar puncture: required to exclude SAH definitively if CT scan is negative; xanthochromia confirms the diagnosis (~2 hr after onset)
Cerebral angiography: used to identify bleeding source
