Morocco Adventures with Intrepid—January 2019

I met up with my Intrepid Tour group after 5 days on my own in Casablanca.  It was the first time with Intrepid Tours and I was joined by seven other travelers—5 from Australia and 2 from the UK, and it won’t be my last because the costs are low for a great insider's view of the places we visited in our action-packed tour of Morocco.

After a short stay in Casablanca, we took the nearby train to Rabat for a walkabout the Kasbah and by several government buildings followed by another train ride to Meknes where we would stay the night.

Some of the highlights of this trip included:
Walking through various Kasbahs, Medinas, and markets in Meknes, Fez, El Khorbat, Ait Benhaddou, Essaouira, and Marrakech.
Trekking in Midelt, Merzouga—camel ride into the Sahara, Todra Gorge, and Armoud.
Homestays in Midelt and the Atlas Mountains near Armoud.
Visiting arts and craft workshops including tanneries, weaving, pottery, ceramics, rug making, and gems.
Feasting on traditional Moroccan food including camel burgers, tagine, seafood, street food, and Marrakech popup dinner.
Folk dancing and singing at a homestay and at our Sahara Desert camp.
Seeing several movie studio sets and movie locations for popular movies including “Game of Thrones”, “Gladiator”, “Cleopatra”, “Blackhawk Down”, etc. more details you can check out Intrepid for the trip which includes the tour costs and dates.

After Marrakech, I continued to revisit Essaouira, and then back to Casablanca where I took the new high-speed train—317 km per hour— to Tangiers.  I spent a few days there wandering through the Medina there and even stayed at the El Muniria Hotel—the site of the Beat Generation where William Burroughs lived while writing “The Naked Lunch”.  Wall pictures showed him along with Jack Kerouac and Allan Ginsberg.  I then moved on to the Melting Pot Hostel in the middle of the Medina before boarding the high-speed boat to Spain.
