Indonesian Festival Brought Indonesia Closer to Canada

Indonesian Consulate had captivated the attention of Vancouver residents to visit Robson Square at the downtown of Vancouver. Indonesian festival titled Destination Indonesia-Land of Remarkable Heritage hosted by Indonesian Consulate, had drawn the attention of around 500 people to visit the festival held on 17 September 2016.

Indonesian Consul General in her remarks highlighted the potentials of Indonesia which is bestowed with abundant of natural resources as well as rich in icons of cultural diversity recognized by the UNESCO as the world heritage. Consul General hoped the festival would serve as the means to attract the Canadian visiting Indonesia and directly experience the natural beauty and culture.

Indonesia festival represented the variety of Indonesian culture from several regions such as Javanese gamelan, angklung of West java, masked dance from Vava, legong and sri kamelawi dance from Bali, piring dance from Sumatera and a piano play, all of which were performed by Indonesian diaspora and several local community.

Beside enjoying on-stage performances, visitors also paid a great interest in seeing all the products and culinary booths. The displayed products such as widely known Indonesian garment of batik as exhibited by vendors such as Omnita, Eksotika Design, Annabel Kewas, Indonesian home decor brought by vendor Casamia, pearl jewelry and weaving brought by the Province of South Sulawesi and food product displayed by vendor Vitic.

The visitors’ enthusiasts to visit the festival were awarded with the experienced to enjoy the delicacy of Indonesian food as the crowd lined up to get the taste of beef rendang, spicy Bali chicken, Balado egg, Indonesian coffee, and ice cendol as refreshment drink. Tourism operators that offered package to destinations in Indonesia (Metro Travel and Silk Holiday) received well responses and orders from the visitors interested to visit Indonesian. Indonesian diaspora society also took advantage of the opportunity to disseminate their programs. Indonesia Consulate and ITPC also responded several inquiries from visitors about Indonesia and promoting the upcoming program such Trade Expo Indonesia in Jakarta, October 2016.

The opening ceremony of the festival was formally marked with the sound of Angklung by Indonesian Consul General and Guest of Honor, Richard T.Lee/MLA Burnaby North, attended by several Consul General/Consul of Foreign Consulates in Vancouver and former ambassador of Canada to Indonesia, H.E. Earl Drake. The joyous occasion was then concluded with full celebration by the whole crowd with the performance of Poco-Poco and Gemu Famire Dance.
