Sher Shah, having clandestinely prepared for war, confronted Marwar with an 80,000-strong cavalry force, while Marwar fielded 4,000-12,000 Rathore horsemen and archers.
The strategic manoeuvring of Sher Shah, including an irregular path via Didwana and entrenchment at Sammel, set the stage for a month-long standoff. Facing challenges in supplying food for his massive army in the hostile desert terrain, Sher Shah resorted to a cunning ploy, dropping forged letters to create discord among Marwar commanders.
The ensuing Battle of Sammel saw Jaita and Kumpa, despite being outnumbered, displaying remarkable valour. The Afghan forces, employing superior numbers and artillery, eventually overpowered the Rathores. Sher Shah emerged victorious, but not without significant casualties. The aftermath witnessed Khawas Khan Marwat occupying Jodhpur temporarily, only for Maldeo to reclaim lost territories by July 1545. The battle left an indelible mark on history, with Sher Shah acknowledging.
