Wildlife conservation photographer Carla Rhodes presented at the monthly Berkshire Green Drinks hybrid event on February 8, 2023. The in-person gathering was held at Barrington Brewery in Great Barrington, MA.
Carla spoke about her inspiring journey of how she suddenly flipped her career from comedy to conservation photography. Often with jokes and humor, she told stories of past projects while showing some of the awe-inspiring moments she captured through her photography.
After a life-changing encounter with endangered Greater Adjutant storks in Northeastern India, former comedic ventriloquist Carla Rhodes switched gears and dedicated her creative energy to conservation photography. With work published in The New York Times, The Guardian, and more, Carla’s untraditional path to helping elevate wildlife through the art form of photography inspires people to chase their wildest dreams.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Carla Rhodes is a wildlife conservation photographer who tells engaging and impactful photographic stories featuring the natural world. Through the powerful medium of photography, Carla is able to share the connection, deep love, and sense of awe she feels when witnessing the magic of nature.
Prior to finding photography, Carla was pursuing a career in show business (as a comedian and ventriloquist, believe it or not). Shortly after purchasing a DSLR to create short videos, she began turning her lens on wildlife. Used to being in front of the camera, her passion rapidly became behind the lens.
In Carla’s past career, she lent her voice to inanimate objects. Since dedicating her life to wildlife conservation photography, she’s given her voice to elevating wild subjects – and the humans who are helping them. She especially gravitates toward photographing misunderstood subjects, such as endangered Greater Adjutant storks and overlooked “common” species (such as moths and mice), who are no less fabulous than their exotic counterparts.
Photographing with passion and a sense of humor, Carla’s self-produced photographic pieces have been published in The New York Times, Smithsonian, National Wildlife, Audubon, The Guardian, and more. The Verge, Science Friday, and NowThis News have also produced video pieces featuring her photographic work.
Ultimately, Carla aspires for her photographs to evoke emotion, educate viewers, and inspire positive change.
