Jacob van Rijs / MVRDV - SFU DutchDesign

A graduate of Delft Technical University, Jacob van Rijs now teaches at the Architecture Academy Amsterdam, Architecture Academy Rotterdam, Architectural Association School of Architecture London, Cooper Union New York, among a few others. In 1991 both him and Winy Maas decided to leave their positions at OMA to form MVRDV with Nathalie de Vries. The firm's work is renowned for its approach to density, creating three-dimensional spaces through cantilevers and an understanding of different climates within a space. They are less interested in the facade of the building than in maximizing interior possibilities through the blurring and interdependency of interior and exterior space. Their research into the mixing of functions has led them to explore computer aided systems for designing space that they now develop through their research division at Delft Technical University, The Why Factory.
