In a major crackdown on the illegal trade in animals, police in India have seized wild animal skins from a fur dealer in Srinagar.

The police allege the trade in animal hides is part of an international smuggling racket.

It was a fashionable fur shop in Srinagar that yielded this rich booty.

Over 48 skins of a variety of wild animals were recovered from the shop.

Many of the animals are protected under the Indian state's wildlife act.

The skins are valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars on the international market.

The cache included two rare red fox skins, three leopard skins, the hides of four Himalayan foxes and a few common fox skins.

After a couple of days research, the Jammu and Kashmir police were able to arrest the owner of the shop.

"We were working on the information and we reached specific information just about two days back. Immediately we organised a raid and we managed to get this from the interiors of the town."

The shop owner was arrested.

Police are hoping the arrested man might be able to give them some leads to the international smuggling racket they believe is operating in the Kashmir valley.
