The Nissan Sunderland Factory begins production of the third-generation Qashqai, with a renewed commitment to inspire next-generation production capabilities. After a £400m investment, the latest version of the segment-defining crossover is now rolling off the plant's First Production Line as the factory celebrates 35 years of production in the UK.

The Qashqai represents one-fifth of all cars produced in the UK since its launch 14 years ago, and to celebrate the next-generation model, Nissan is offering every schoolchild in North East England the opportunity to participate in the Nissan Skills Foundation, the company's program for young people in manufacturing and engineering careers. Alan Johnson, Nissan's Vice President of Production in the UK, said: "The Sunderland Factory is built on 35 years of manufacturing excellence, and from the skills and expertise of our world-class team emerges a car for the future.

“More than 3.5 million customers have chosen a Sunderland-built Qashqai since it went on sale in 2007, and the third-generation model offers the new levels of technology, design and performance people have come to expect from the original crossover.

Since the original model was launched in 2007, the Qashqai has broken record after record. It was the fastest UK car to reach one million, two million and three million units, and now more than 3.5 million have been produced in Sunderland – about a third of the factory's all-time total. These figures also mean that one in five cars produced in the UK since 2007 is the Qashqai, the highest volume car ever produced in the UK.
