Reasi, one of the newly established districts in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, was formed on April 1, 2007. It is primarily a hilly district with diverse climatic conditions, ranging from sub-tropical to semi-temperate. Geographically, the district can be divided into two regions: hilly and low-lying hilly.

The district is further divided into nine tehsils and has 22 niabats. There are also 12 development blocks with 153 panchayat halquas.

Agriculture and allied activities are the main occupations of the people in this economically underdeveloped district. Maize and wheat are the primary crops grown here, but farmers have now started diversifying into horticulture and vegetable crops.

Reasi is surrounded by Udhampur district to the east, Ramban district to the northeast, Rajouri district to the west and northwest, Jammu district to the south, and it also shares a border with Shopian district to the north.

The district is traversed by the Chenab River, one of the major rivers in the country, which serves as a geographical boundary between Tehsil Reasi and Tehsil Mahore. Additionally, there are several small rivers and rivulets in the district that eventually merge into the Chenab, including Ans, Rudd, Plassu, Ban Ganga, Pai, and Anji.

Reasi has significant potential for micro and mini hydel electricity generation, and it is home to one of the largest hydel projects in the country, the Salal Hydro Electric Project on the Chenab River, with a total generation capacity of 690 MW.

The district is also known for its historical and culturally significant places, including the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, Shri Shiv Khori Shrine, Shri Bawa Aghar Jitto Ji, Shri Siarh Baba Ji, Shri Baba Dhansar Ji, Sh. Dera Baba Bhanda Bahadur Ji, and Ziarat Baji Ismail Sahib near Bharakh. Additionally, Reasi is home to the renowned Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University located at Kakrial (Panthal).

The flora of the District is abundant and offers a vast potential for horticulture fruits such as Citrus, Quince, Apple, Mango, Guava, Apricot, and more. These fruits are grown in various climatic conditions throughout the District.
