This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Blaise Pascal's unfinished work, the Pensées, specifically on his discussion about how self-love (amour propre) renders human beings averse to acknowledging the truth about themselves, others, and the world. Self love makes us prefer a false self-image to the truth of who we are, and we pressure others to lie to us about who we are what qualities we possess (or lack).
