Tribal communities rely heavily on forests for their livelihood. Despite the Ujjwala Yojana that promises LPG to local communities, people prefer to use firewood for their daily heating, cooking and other needs. On a daily basis, these people have to face the perils of black carbon pollution in their own kitchens. Oxfam India has piloted an approach to establish an improved cook stove called Sarla Chulha, made from locally sourced materials. This has cut the firewood use to half and eliminated the smoke generated from traditional chulhas. This cost-effective alternative has made a significant difference in the daily lives of the tribal communities of Godda in Jharkahand. Here is their story.
