Justice Suryakant has been sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, succeeding Justice B.R. Gavai. In his nearly 15-month tenure, which extends until February 9, 2027, he is expected to prioritise long-pending Constitution bench matters, including those before seven and nine-judge benches. According to India Today's Aneesha Mathur, Justice Suryakant has stated his priorities, noting that 'his tenure will see the Constitution benches in the seven and nine judges' bench matters...Those matters will be prioritized during his tenure'. He has also emphasised the promotion of 'Swadeshi jurisprudence' and tackling the high pendency of cases across Indian courts. Key issues that may be heard include the definition of a money bill, the extent of judicial intervention in religious practices, the Places of Worship Act, and the decriminalisation of politics.
