- “가슴 아픈 사건들이 다시는 발생하지 않길 바란다. 그래서 이 곡을 통해 안타깝게 목숨을 잃은 어린 영혼들을 달래고, 상처로 고통 받는 아이들에게 조금이나마 위로가 되길 바란다.”

25현 가야금과 국악관현악이 함께 하는 ‘어린 꽃’은 최근 우리에게 큰 충격을 남긴 아동학대 사건들을 마주한 작곡가가 사회에 메시지를 던지는 곡으로, 작곡가는 “우리가 살고 있는 현재, 바로 그 현재를 반영하는 음악을 만들어 보려한다.”며 이 곡을 작곡했다. 곡의 제목이기도 한 ‘어린 꽃’은 고통 받는 아이들을 상징함과 동시에, 작곡가의 바람을 대신하는 징표이기도 하다.

작품은 다섯 부분으로 구성됐다. 4개의 음(C·D·E·F)을 중심으로 한 도입부 ‘구원의 손길’은 아이들이 처한 어두운 사회를 묘사한다. 가야금 독주는 밝은 듯하지만, 바람에 힘없이 흔들리는 작은 꽃(아이들)을 묘사한다. 두 번째 ‘불안한 그림자’는 변주되는 박자를 통해 불안한 이미지를 표현하고, 이러한 소리의 이미지들은 아이들의 밝은 모습과 대비되며 가슴 아픈 현실과 비극을 암시한다. 이어서 나오는 가야금 독주는 버림받은 아이들의 쓸쓸함을 그리고 있다. 세 번째 ‘어둠 속의 고통’은 도움을 기다리는 아이들과 그들을 찾아 헤매는 어른들의 모습을 묘사한다. 네 번째 ‘한 줄기 빛’은 어둠에서 아이들을 구하는 것을 표현했다. 빠른 템포는 희망을 상징하고, 점진적인 모티프의 발전을 통해 조금씩 변화하는 사회를 표현한다. 다섯 번째 ‘훨훨 날아가렴’은 아이들을 위한 위로의 음악이다. 그리고 이런 비극이 다신 발생하지 않길 바라는 마음을 가야금의 카덴차와 강한 종지부에 담았다.

- “I hope that heartbreaking incidents don’t happen again. I hope that this piece consoles children who lost their lives unfortunately and that it encourages those suffering from pain.”

Joined by the 25-string gayageum and Korean orchestral music, “Young Flowers” conveys the composer’s message to Korean society which has recently faced outrageous child abuse cases. The composer says, “I wanted to create a piece reflecting the very present in which we live.” Its title “Young Flowers” symbolizes children who are suffering and at the same time, it expresses the composer’s wish.

This is a piece in five sections. Focused on four notes (C, D, E and F), “Saving Hands” describes the darkenss of society faced by children. Although the solo performance of the gayageum feels light, it actually implies small flowers (children) who sway in the wind powerlessly. The second section “Anxious Shadow” generates images of anxiety through variations of beats. Such images stand in contrast to children’s cheerfulness, thus suggesting the heartbreaking reality and tragedy. This is followed by a solo performnce of the gayageum to depict the loneliness of abandoned children. The third section “Pain in the Dark” describes children who wait for help and adults who search for them everywhere. The fourth section “A Ray of Light” shows a scene where children are saved from the dark. The section’s fast tempo symbolizes hope and suggests a gradually changing society through the gradual development of its motif. The fifth section “Fly Away Freely” consoles the children. The cadenza of the gayageum and powerful finale express the composer’s wish that such a tragedy won’t happen again.
