Henry "Rufe" Johnson (October 2, 1908 – February 4, 1974), was an American Piedmont blues guitarist, harmonica player, pianist, banjo player singer and songwriter.On occasion he played slide guitar with a pocket knife. He finally found a larger audience with his 1973 album, The Union County Flash! His fame was short-lived, as he died months after its release.
In 1952, he moved from working on a farm to a hospital job, while also making a gradual transition to playing more secular material, on a part-time basis. Discovered by blues historians, Johnson started to give solo concerts, performed on the radio, and joined up musically with his childhood friend Peg Leg Sam.
Arthur Jackson, known as Peg Leg Sam (December 18, 1911 – October 27, 1977) was an American country blues harmonicist, singer and comedian. He recorded "Fox Chase" and "John Henry" and worked in medicine shows.He gained his nickname following an accident whilst hoboing in 1930.
Bruce Bastin (born 19 September 1939 in Chelmsford, Essex, England) is an English folklorist and a leading expert on the blues styles of the southeastern states of America, (East Coast Blues and Piedmont Blues).
He is responsible for much ground-breaking research (much done initially with folklorist Peter B. Lowry) over the decades.
A former secondary school geography teacher, Bastin holds a master's degree in Folklore from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the author of two books on the Piedmont blues, Crying for the Carolines and Red River Blues: The Blues Tradition in the Southeast, as well as a biography of music publisher Joe Davis, Never Sell a Copyright. He has written articles for many music journals and books over the decades, plus liner note essays on the South Eastern blues style.
Jay Anania is a director and writer, known for William Vincent (2010), The Letter (2012) and The Girl Under the Waves (2001).
Jay Anania heads the directing program at the graduate film school at New York University and is one of James Franco's teachers.
