On March 19, 2014, a distressing emergency call led police to a home in Las Fuentes, Guamuchil, Mexico. They discovered the lifeless body of 16-year-old Anel Bayz Alvarez, who had suffered over 60 stab wounds. Anel was born on March 17, 1998, and was known for her cheerful personality and love for dancing and music. Her family had been close-knit, but tragedy struck when her mother passed away from cancer in 2012.

Anel's best friend, Andy Elizabeth Gutierrez, initially shared a strong bond with her, but their friendship soured over time. Andy's increasing involvement in the narco culture and her troubling social media posts raised concerns. Despite the growing distance, Anel never spoke ill of Andy.

On the day of the murder, Anel's father Hugo discovered her body after she failed to pick up her younger sister from school. The investigation quickly pointed to Andy, especially after finding threatening messages on her social media. Andy was arrested at Anel's funeral, where she showed up with visible scratches and bruises.

Andy confessed to the murder, citing a dispute over a photo Anel had posted without her consent. However, many believed the true motive was envy. Despite the brutal nature of the crime, Andy was sentenced to only seven years in juvenile detention, later reduced to five years, and she was released after serving just three and a half years. The lenient sentence sparked outrage and a sense of injustice among the public and Anel's family.
