Did you start playing guitar around the 1st to 3rd frets?
Most guitar players do.
In fact, wouldn’t it be funny if someone showed you your first chord and it was way up on the 20th fret?

I’m sure it’s happened to someone out there.
But guitarists do typically tend to get the lower frets down first. They learn basic chords and become solid (campfire) guitarists. Then one day, they might jam with another musician. Perhaps they’ve started a band or gotten together with some friends in the neighborhood. And that’s when they discover this horrible truth…

They don’t like how it sounds when guitarists are all playing the same parts in the same position/register.

It sounds muddy.

Now, I’m not talking about a “double”. Sometimes guitarists will do this on purpose in the studio for effect and it can sound great…at times.

However, an entire set of songs with 4 guitar players on stage all playing the same parts will sound amateur.

But when you know how to play higher up the neck using different diads, triads, and chord inversions you can turn the sound into a guitar-orchestra. You know how in a symphony, the cellos play one part, while the 1st and 2nd violins play something else? Well, doing this on guitar creates an amazing sound. In fact, this has been one of the golden secrets to my studio guitar career in Hollywood.

My ability to stop thinking like a guitarist, but more like an arranger.

I arrange the notes on the fretboard.

However, if players don’t know how to navigate the neck and work this out. Then they’ll be stuck with all the other guitar players playing the same parts and sounding muddy.
