This game is like if an autistic paraplegic made their best guess at what walking must be like.

Have you ever been a fat 35 year old getting nowhere in life? No? Are you even my target audience?

This is Baby Steps, a walking sim for people who hate themselves. So nothing new there really.

The game was made by Bennett Foddy, Creator of classics such as Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy and Sid Meiers QWOP for people who remember Albino Black Sheep and newgrounds. Pro Tip: Indy Devs, consider putting your name in your game's title instead of pretending you're an entire studio. Ignore this advice if Blockchain is part of your name.

Mechanics work like this. Left and right trigger control how high you raise each knee and the right joystick controls your bodies tilt. When a foot is lifted you control the placement of that foot. You have to be careful because you can also trip on your own legs. It sounds more complicated than it is and in a couple minutes you can fairly confidently walk by gently holding forwards and pumping the left and right triggers in a nice rhythm. It's actually kinda therapeutic. But also it's exactly like breathing. As soon as you have to think about it you crack your head open on a pile of rocks. Just like with breathing.

The game as speckled with hidden story scenes packed with foddys auzzie humour, so while there is an obvious direct path to take to the next story Beat the countryside is full of little fascinations designed to lead you off the beaten path and more often than not troll the shit out of you.

You can burn through the demo in half an hour easy. Or you could do it in 15 if you aren't a dickhead like me, but you are, sooo yeah.

What i like about foddy's games, isn't so much the genre he's spawned, foddian rage platformers, but the sheer absurdity of overcomplicating something as simple as ambulating. It's a reminder that anything can be a game if you map enough inputs to it.

When i first got hyped for this back in oh my lord, 2023, my prediction was that it would be a game that would blow up for streamers for about a week in 2024. I was wrong, it'll blow up for a week after 9 September 2025.
