There is a lot of negative attention currently being directed at the vinyl flooring industry. Anti-plastic news headlines are flooding social media, including from well-known organizations such as the Center for Environmental Health, the Healthy Building Network, and others. Additionally, the Feb. 2023 Ohio train derailment caused a massive release of vinyl chloride, which is used to create vinyl flooring, resulting in a multi-state environmental and health disaster. These recent developments have created a competitive opportunity to showcase ceramic tile’s sustainability story: the health and environmental benefits of ceramic tile. This session will endeavor to condense and package this somewhat broad and complex sustainability story into some key talking points covering the ceramic tile industry’s four sustainability initiatives: Green Squared, EPDs, Material Ingredient Reporting, and Embodied Carbon.
