In this video, we answer the 3 big questions related to the recent announcement made by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regarding the withdrawal of ₹2,000 currency notes. On May 19, the RBI declared that the 2,000 notes will be withdrawn in a phased manner, although they will remain legal tender. We tell you where you can exchange the notes, how many notes can be exchanged at a time and if ID proofs will be required.
To implement their 'Clean Note Policy' and ensure the availability of good quality banknotes to the public, the RBI also instructed banks to stop issuing ₹2,000 notes immediately, as stated in their May 19 notification.
The RBI states that approximately 89% of the ₹2,000 denomination notes were issued prior to March 2017, reaching the end of their estimated life span of four to five years. The total value of these notes in circulation has significantly decreased from ₹6.73 lakh crore at its peak on 31 March 2018 (constituting 37.3% of the notes in circulation) to ₹3.62 lakh crore, representing only 10.8% of the notes in circulation as of 31 March 2023.
