IELTS TOEFL Descriptive Essay (full sample 9 / 30)

One type of essay type that might appear on the IELTS or TOEFL writing section is the descriptive essay. In this case, the test will ask you describe a person, an event, a situation, a place, or anything else. In this video, we write essays describing an effective manager (business).

It is important to note that TOEFL and IELTS may present these questions differently: TOEFL may ask for a straightforward description, while IELTS may want you to make an argument as well.
In this video, we look at both types of question (with and without an argument) and how to approach these with different thesis statements and body paragraph structures.

Our sample TOEFL essay has 390 words and three body paragraphs, whereas the IELTS uses 320 words and two body paragraphs. We have also included a shorter version of the IELTS (263 words) to demonstrate how length is not a central focus of the writing section.
