STORYLINE
Israeli Defence Minister Amir Peretz and military chief Lieutenant General Dan Halutz visited an army base in southern Israel on Friday that is a staging area for the Israeli military offensive in northern Gaza.
Peretz said they had no intention of sinking in the Gaza mire, repeating an earlier vow. He said if the Palestinian militants who have taken capture an Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit don't give him back, and if the Palestinians don't stop firing rockets, then Israel would not hesitate to attack.
"We've got two aims; one is the return of Gilad Shalit home, (the second is) to severely hit and damage the launching abilities of the terror organisation."
Dan Halutz said there was "no excuse to operate from Gaza against Israel once we left Gaza totally," adding that he was taking the Hamas movement as responsible.
Israel renewed its assault in northern Gaza after sunrise on Friday, with two airstrikes, killing one militant from the Palestinians' ruling Hamas Party, and wounding three, Hamas and hospital officials said.
The military said aircraft fired at four armed Palestinians in an area where there had been exchanges of fire. Two were wounded in the second airstrike, hospital officials said.
Palestinians fired 14 rockets at Israel in the preceding 24 hours that led up to Friday's early morning Israeli airstrikes.
On Thursday 24 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks.
The Israeli forces reached the outskirts of Beit Lahiya at midday (0900 GMT).
Footage taken by an embedded AP reporter within the Israeli army showed soldiers taking over a two-story house with a family inside.
An Israeli tank and several armoured vehicles surrounded the house. The family was confined to the ground floor.
On Thursday Israel's tanks and troops took control of a stretch of land in Gaza in an attempt, it says, to win freedom for a soldier captured by militants and put Israel out of the militants' increasingly longer rocket range.
