John Melchior Bosco (Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco), SDB popularly known as John Bosco and Don Bosco. He was born in Becchi, Italy, on August 16, 1815. His birth took place during a period of great hardship in the region, with the end of the Napoleonic Wars and drought and famine affecting the area.
At the age of two, John lost his father and was raised primarily by his mother, Margherita, who would later be declared venerable by the Church in 2006. Despite their poverty, John's mother instilled in him a strong sense of devotion to the church and compassion for those in need, often opening their door to the homeless who sought food, shelter, or clothing.
John's life was forever changed at the age of nine, when he had a vivid dream in which he encountered a multitude of boys who were playing and swearing, and a great, majestic man and woman who told him that he would "conquer these your friends" in meekness and charity. The woman also said, "be strong, humble and robust. When the time comes, you will understand everything." This dream influenced John's life and choices in the future.
At the same time, John was fascinated by the circus performers he saw and decided that he could use their tricks and acrobatics to attract others and share his message. He began performing shows for the children he played with, and eventually discerned the call to become a priest.
However, as a poor boy, John faced many challenges in achieving his goal. Despite opposition from his brother, he found work as a farm laborer, met a priest named Joseph Cafasso who helped him, and eventually entered the seminary in 1835. He was ordained a priest in 1841 and assigned to the city of Turin, where he saw firsthand the suffering of the city's poor and the boys who were incarcerated in the prisons.
Fr. Bosco went into the streets to reach the young men and boys, using his skills as a performer to capture their attention and share his message. He worked tirelessly to help the boys, providing them with work and lodgings and negotiating better conditions for apprentices. He also encouraged those who had a vocation to the priesthood and helped them prepare for ordination. Despite some opposition from other priests and the Chief of Police, Fr. Bosco continued his work and in 1859, established the Society of St. Francis de Sales with 15 seminarians and one teenage boy.
The organization still exists today and continues to help people, especially boys, with their faith formation and to stay out of trouble.
He is a patron saint of apprentices, editors, publishers, and youth.
His feast day is celebrated on January 31.
