Hello and welcome back to a educational video that will help you with your thinking process during a chess match. I am pretty sure you have heard of the phrase “checks/capture/threats” so this is what we would be focus on today. Checks/captures and threats are referring to thinking process meant to help players find the best moves in a complicated position. Meaning during a position, where is your turn to play, the best practice is to first see if there are any available checks you can deliver to your opponent and also improve your position. There are many times when you can give a check, but if you don’t have a viable continuation, you need to look for better moves that would give you an edge over your opponent.

If there are no checks that are improving your position, we move to our second point on that checklist “catures”. Can we capture an enemy pieces? If not, can the enemy capture one of my piece next turn?

If not, we go to the last point “threats”. Can I create any threats in this position? Maybe creating a battery to threaten taking a piece, maybe threatening checkmates and so one.

The theory is easy, the problem is to applied in a game. Let’s see some scenarios that would help you understand this concept a little better.

I hope you would found the video useful and will try to apply this checklist on your game. Take your time before you move and don’t rush, analyze your position a little more, look at all the board and don’t get tunnel vision. Remember that you don’t need to imedately respond to what your enemy moved or attacked, if you can find a better move, do that instead.
Take care and keep on practicing.
