Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!

Well, the curse of the HP2 ball is at it again. Roto Grip’s newest mid-tier release, the Hyped solid is the third in the line featuring the hyped core, this time wrapped in the VTC solid coverstock finished to a 3000 grit out of the box. The entire hyped line follows in the footsteps of the MVPs, the Winners, the Show-offs and the Wreckers, all of which struggled to move from the wall in the pro shop and into arsenals.

But, for the right bowler, these intermediate performance pieces are often the key to putting their entire arsenal together and having a good look in almost any circumstance. So, with that I was excited to get this hyped solid drilled up and out onto the lanes as I have recently been struggling with symmetrical solid pieces and seeing the right shape.

And as expected, the hyped solid was that simple, effective, but often times boring shape going down the lane. The shots more towards the outside part of the lane grabbed the dry boards effectively and the ball caught a good roll. Moving inside, I got trapped into corner pin city, and as I moved further inside and was able to keep my angles closer to the head pin, the carry percentage improved again. In short, this was exactly what I expected from this piece.

The hyped solid is one part iQ tour, one part show off and it all depends on what you do with your hand. I have always seen the iQ as a hook, set, roll type motion and when I would get around the hyped and float it to the breakpoint, that is what it did. The original show off rolled very strong in the midlane, but had a very tame release off the back of the pattern and when I stayed behind the hyped solid and got it to friction early, that is what it did. That type of versatility is impressive from Roto Grip, but it needs to be put into the right hands.

This versatility means that you need to know where to be with it and when its right, because when it isn’t you will leave more corner pins than you can make. This type of shape is untouchable when it is right, and is extremely easy to beat when it is wrong, and it all depends on your ability to read your ball motion.

So to me, that means that the Hyped Solid is the bowler’s bowling ball. If you’re looking for that piece to bring out once a week at your tuesday night league and throw it for three games and average 230, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking to be competitive in a variety centers and on a variety of conditions, this piece is almost essential to have with you.

It’s the high rev players new benchmark from Storm products. Its less than then phaze 2 in overall strength and a little more even front to back than the iQ tour. It’s able to be played in multiple parts of the lane and get to the pocket easily, the only question being if it carries the corners or not. And that predictability applies both on house and sport conditions.

The Hyped solid is probably not going to wow people with its shape getting to the pins, but its certainly a piece that when it is matched up with the bowler that knows what they’re doing with it, those same people will wonder how your scores are so much higher than theirs.
