Even after hundreds of rescues, those moments still shake us. There is no getting used to digging into a seal’s open wound, no anaesthetic, and no time to lose. But we have no better alternative. Sedation would mean holding the animal far longer, increasing the risk of stress and complications. And partial anaesthetics are not viable in the field without a vet on site.
So we do the only thing we can: act fast, hold steady, and release quickly. It’s brutal and unfair to the seal, and to the rescuer, but plastic leaves us no choice.
