Mr. Hosokawa is a Japanese businessman gone to stay in some south American country in order to attend his own birthday party. He is in the home of the vice-president where the great opera singer, Roxane Coss, has come to perform. She is Mr. Hosokawa's favorite opera singer and he would travel the world to see her perform, she is the only reason he agreed to come to this party. As Roxane ends her set, a group of terrorists burst in looking to take the president of the country hostage, but he is not in attendance having remained in his home in order to not miss his favorite soap opera. So the terrorists take the whole party hostage and demands that the president be handed over to them. But when this doesn't happen, the hostage situation gets strung out over months.
During this time the terrorists stop being terrorists and just become companions to those they have captured. They form bonds and friendships and even fall in love.
