🚨 What SAE Means (and Why It Matters)

SAE J845 is the North American standard for warning lights — the benchmark used by Transport Canada, MTO, and the Ministry of Labour.

When a light says SAE J845 Class 1, it means it’s been lab-tested for:
✅ Brightness and visibility (candela)
✅ Flash pattern and color accuracy
✅ Durability and temperature performance
✅ Full 360-degree coverage

If it’s not certified, it’s not compliant — no matter how bright it looks in a dark garage.

⚙️ Class 1 vs Class 2 — The Real Difference

Class 1:
• Brightest, visible day or night
• Legal for roadway use (Tow, Plow, Construction, Public Works)
• Meets Ontario HTA and Book 7 standards

Class 2:
• Lower output, meant for off-road or private-yard use
• Not accepted as primary on-road warning lighting

👉 If your vehicle operates on a public roadway, it must have at least one 360° Class 1 SAE J845 beacon or be equipped with 360 degree visibility of Class 1 lights, such as surface mounts.
Class 2 lights are great supplements — but they can’t replace Class 1 compliance.

Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to “take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a worker.”
