April is Senior Hunger Awareness Month, and we hosted a 30-minute webinar to offer some helpful tips for Kinship Families. We’ve invited Misha Marvel of Hunger Solutions New York to talk about resources they or the children in their care may be eligible for, such as SNAP, WIC, and soon, ESAP – the Elderly Simplified Application Project – that will be able to help people age 60 and over or those with a disability apply for nutrition assistance.

According to Feeding America’s report released just before the COVID-19 pandemic, seniors who lived with grandchildren in 2018 were more than twice as likely to be food insecure than seniors who did not. This meant that one in six seniors in multi-generational households was food insecure.

While the existence of food insecurity has always been unacceptable, the pandemic highlighted the importance of maximizing our nation’s nutrition assistance programs, and the need for service providers and policy makers to apply an intergenerational approach.

Children who enter kinship care may have already experienced the harsh reality of hunger. This video highlights programs and services that can help kinship families get the healthy and nutritious food they need.
