【078】Powerful Em Slap Bass Riffs: From Beginner to Intermediate

In this video, I perform a powerful and cool Slap Bass riff in Em.

This phrase works great as a bass solo and is impressive enough to play when someone asks you to demonstrate something. I practiced this riff when I was in high school, with only a year of bass playing experience, so it’s perfect for beginners looking to level up.

1. Bass EX 01
Start with a thumb slap on the open E string, then pull off two octaves higher, and quickly move back to the 2nd fret of the 4th string. This exercise focuses on just the 1st and 2nd beats.
2. Bass EX 02
Practice a combination of two ghost notes followed by a hammer-on.
3. Bass EX 03
Incorporate two ghost notes with a hammer-on on the 3rd string followed by a slap pull-off.
4. Bass EX 04
Focus on two ghost notes and a pull-off. Pulling off on the 2nd string can be tricky as it requires placing your finger between the 1st and 2nd strings.
5. Bass EX 05
Combine the techniques from EX 02 and EX 04 in this exercise.
6. Bass EX 06
Play a funky and classic octave phrase.
