Great blue herons are the largest herons in North America. They're huge birds with slate-gray bodies, chestnut, blue, and black accents, and very long legs and necks. In flight they look enormous, with six-foot wingspans. Adults have shaggy ruffs on their necks.

Great blue herons hunt by standing silently along riverbanks, lakeshores, seashores, and wet meadows, waiting for passing prey, which they strike with their bills. They also stalk their prey slowly and deliberately, as shown in this video.
