Let's talk about Zhen from Kung Fu Panda 4. Whatever you think about her, I can't help but feel a bit sorry for her character. Ever since her trailer reveal, it's been a tidal wave of negativity – from her design to her voice actress, and the whole "replacing" the Furious Five drama. I get it; I have my reservations too, and it bugs me that the Five aren't getting a more prominent role. But, you know, it is what it is. At the same time, I sympathize with Zhen. She's got some massive shoes to fill as the movie's deuteragonist, taking the spotlight from Tigress and the Five. Even if she's well-written with a satisfying character arc, the movie's direction feels like a recipe for disaster for her character. I get the concern about her being a Mary Sue, I get it. But let's not jump the gun on that one; she's a thief and a criminal suddenly thrust into the Dragon Warrior role. It's pretty clear she's in for an internal struggle to figure out who she really is. Plus, we've got the perfect example of a non-Mary Sue character in this series – Tigress. Hopefully, they take a page from Tigress's book for Zhen's character growth.
