Product Info: Wordoku, from Calliope Games, is a tile-based word game for 1-6 players, ages 8+. Games typically take about 20-30 minutes to play. The game includes 150 Letter Tiles, 15 Award Tokens, a scorepad, and a storage pouch. Wordoku is a combination of Sudoku and crossword puzzle play, and it also reminds me of Scrabble and Boggle. Your goal is to create as many words as you can, within a grid, and before 5 minutes is up. The game is played in three rounds. You'll notice that there are are two pouches - hold off on the smaller pouch, the one with diamond-symbols on the tiles. That's for advanced play, as explained in the instructions. Take out the other tiles and lay them face-down, so you can see their symbols. Pick 16 tiles, and make sure that you get 4 of each symbol: clovers, stars, squares and circles. Then start your 5-minute timer and flip all tiles. Move around your tiles to create as many 3 or 4 letter words as you can - but remember that you need to stay within a 4x4 grid. Along the way you can swap out one tile per symbol, and you can also use one wild tile per symbol. For a wild, flip the tile. Try to create balanced words, where each letter is a different symbol - that will score you more points. Each letter in a word will earn you one point. Balanced words will earn you double points. Wild tiles earn zero points. At the end of each round, winners get Victor tokens and when you improve upon your old score in a new round, you get a Personal Best token. The player with the most awards after three rounds, wins. As with Scrabble, proper names or non-English words are not permitted. But hey, it's your game and if everyone is fluent in Klingon, you can make your own house rules. Wordoku is easy to learn, but a challenging game to play. Fans of word and spelling games will welcome it into their collection.
